Sustainability Policies

Environmental management arrangements for the university are set out in the Carbon and Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) which forms part of the Estates Strategy 2022–31. Progress against the plan and the University's environmental governance arrangements are overseen by the Carbon and Environmental Management Group (CEMG), which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. Our progress is reported annually in the Estates Annual Report, which can be found on the Estates Strategy page.

In 2024/25, the university has completed its first submission to join the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. These are global performance tables that assess universities against the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). See how we’re advancing the SDG’s.

Strategies and Policies

Carbon Management Plan

Carbon Management Plan which sets out how we are going to achieve a 50% reduction on our carbon emissions from a 2009 baseline by 2020.

Environmental Sustainability Strategy

Document sets out a number of challenging targets in key areas to ensure London Metropolitan University becomes a much more environmentally sustainable organisation.

Environmental Sustainability Policy

The University has committed to reduce its environmental impact in our Strategic Plan. The Environmental Sustainability Policy describes the areas the University is targeting.

Environmental Sustainability Programme Board

ESPB oversees and manages the process of developing and implementing the University's Environmental Management System and Carbon Management Plan.

Environmental Sustainability Management Team

ESMT is formed of representatives from across the University to share and implement sustainability ideas and act as a Fairtrade Steering Group.

Space Temperature Policy

The University has developed a Space Temperature Policy which sets out the temperatures we heat our buildings to, the reasons why and relevant legislation.

Travel and Expenses Policy

The Travel and Expenses Policy includes guidance on travel, subsistence, entertainment and hospitality, gifts and other expenses claims.

Drinking Water Policy

The University is committed to increasing the amount of drinking water we provide and is phasing out the use of bottled water.

Fair Trade Policy

London Metropolitan University and Students’ Union commits to be a Fairtrade University.

Our Sustainable and Ethical Food Policy sets out the University's intention to minimise the impact of its catering operations on the environment and to promote sustainable practices.

Ethical Investment Policy

The University is committed to ethical investment. This policy describes the steps the University is taking to ensure that our investments are ethical.

Hospitality Policy

Hospitality, food waste

The Hospitality service at London Metropolitan is provided centrally by the Estates Department and is keen to support the University’s objective to reduce food waste.
