The first London Met Learning and Teaching Forum of the academic year 2023/24 was held on Wednesday 18 October 2023 from 10am-1.30pm (including networking lunch). The Skills and Simulation Suite, Room SC2- 53 in the Science Centre at Holloway Road Campus, provided a unique opportunity for colleagues to experience an important milestone in the implementation of our 10-year Estates Strategy.
In the context of the impact of our Education for Social Justice Framework (ESJF) as it entered its third year, the University’s excellent outcomes in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2023 and refreshed Student Success Strategy, the Forum's theme was Social Justice and Student Success: Where Next?. The event gave an opportunity to celebrate our achievements together, in particular the recent announcement of the University being awarded TEF SILVER, and plan for the year ahead.
Our exciting and informative programme included a welcome by Professor Julie Hall, Deputy Vice Chancellor; two presentations on social justice education by senior academics from Claflin University (one of our Historically Black Colleges and Universities partners from the United States), and a staff-student panel shared insights into their experiences of and involvement in the institution’s transformational programmes. An interactive session gave attendees the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on the key themes of the event. The event ended with a celebratory lunch to acknowledge the work of our community that resulted in TEF Silver.
The London Met Learning and Teaching Forum series provide an important cross-institutional space to foreground some of the excellent work in areas relating to learning and teaching, and create a dedicated space to facilitate the sharing of effective practice whilst also bringing together our academic community.
The Forum is aimed at course leaders, module leaders, academic mentors, heads of school, heads of subject and ESJF leads, as well as interested colleagues from across professional services. Previous events have discussed NSS initiatives, the experience of international students and the role of Generative AI on HE.
