Recognition and career progression

Recognising professional learning gained through experience and acknowledging the outstanding achievements of staff is integral to our approach. It promotes and highlights the “communal cultural wealth” at London Metropolitan University and invigorates staff engagement with CAP Experiential Route Scheme for AdvanceHE Fellowship. CTE contribution here includes the development and management of the University’s CAP in Academic Practice (Advance HE Fellowship) Scheme and Teaching Fellowships Scheme, and participation in Advance HE’s Aurora programme for women’s leadership development.

London Met’s Framework for CPD in Academic Practice (CAP) makes provision for university staff to obtain professional recognition following initial and continuing professional development (CPD) in relation to teaching and the support of learning in higher education.

It encompasses two routes:

  1. the CAP taught route, through which staff complete certificated modules, constituting a CPD process that includes application to practice;
  2. the CAP experiential route, through which staff make claims for professional recognition based on their previous experience of teaching/learning support, educational leadership, and engagement in relevant CPD.

Our CAP taught and experiential routes are accredited by Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy), which is the UK professional body for teaching and supporting learning in higher education. Advance HE maintains a set of professional standards and guidelines called the Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023).

These standards provide the criteria for professional recognition of practitioners against different categories of fellowship. Those covered by our CAP Scheme include:

  • Associate Fellow (Descriptor 1): Demonstrates an understanding of specific aspects of effective teaching, learning support methods and student learning;
  • Fellow (Descriptor 2): Demonstrates a broad understanding of effective approaches to teaching and learning support as key contributions to high quality student learning;
  • Senior Fellow (Descriptor 3): The defining characteristic of the Senior Fellowship is a sustained record of leading or influencing the practice of those who teach and/or support high quality learning (as expressed in Descriptor D3.1), combined with Practice that extends significantly beyond direct teaching and/or direct support for learning (as expressed in Descriptor 3.3)
