Number of times students reported incidents of "hate crime"

Request

Hello,

I am carrying out a research project looking into hate crimes students have experienced on and around university campuses across the nation.

Would you be able to provide a list of how many times your students have approached the university through means like ‘Student Services’ over the last 3 years regarding an incident of hate crime.

The definition of a hate crime is: Crimes committed against someone because of their disability, transgender-identity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation and should be reported to the police.

We are also looking to find out the type of hate crime that has been recorded and the environment in which it happened? (E.g. disability/ race and student halls or private accommodation?). When providing this information please note, if you have more than one campus, which campus the incident occurred on and the time and date of the incident.

Please may you also give a list of how many occasions police have been contacted by the university to respond to a report of a hate crime and details of the incident that was reported.

Many thanks

Response

Dear Ms...,

I write further to your request for information dated 15 January 2019.  This request has been handled by the University in accordance with its duties and obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 ("FOIA").

You requested details of:

A list of how many times your students have approached the university through means like ‘Student Services’ over the last 3 years regarding an incident of hate crime.

Please may you also give a list of how many occasions police have been contacted by the university to respond to a report of a hate crime and details of the incident that was reported.

Further to your request, the University does not record "hate crimes" as criminal offences are investigated and prosecuted by the police/CPS not the University. The University does deal with disciplinary matters that could encompass harassment based on the characteristics listed in your request. Informal complaints are not recorded and the University does not contact police on behalf of students. It is the individual student's decision as to whether they wish to contact the police.
