Introduction to Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) has long been supported by the University.

As indicated in the Academic Regulations, APEL is an assessment process that involves students in "demonstrating that their previous experience is the equivalent of credit at a particular level (known as experiential learning)".  The process may include an interview, the production of a portfolio, or an oral examination.

The minimum amount of prior learning credit (from previous study or relevant experience) that can be awarded is equivalent to one module at any level. The maximum amount of prior learning credit that can be awarded is 50% of the credits required for a Level 3 award, or two-thirds of the credits required for the intended award at all other levels.

University policy and practice with respect to obtaining academic credits for experiential learning is being reviewed and updated guidance will be made available in due course.
