The Widening Participation and Outreach Team at London Met Uni runs a range of activities specially designed to help you plan your future education and career journey and to make access to university as fair as possible for everyone. This is also a part of our regulatory work to ensure equality of opportunity to higher education with the Office for Students.
What is personal data?
Personal data is information that can be used to identify you from other people, e.g. your name, email address or ID number.
What personal data do we collect?
- Your name, date of birth, school and postcode will allow us to identify you
- An e-mail address and telephone number of a parent/carer in case of emergencies
- Any disability, health and dietary requirements you may have. This is so we have support in place for you on all our activities and will not affect you being considered for any activities
- Your gender and ethnicity, to monitor the equality and diversity of our programmes
- We also give priority on some of our programmes for young people such as young carers, care experienced or estranged students, or if you are eligible for free school meals
Why do you ask for all this and how do you use it?
We want to make sure we are supporting the people who will benefit from each project the most and to see if we are making a difference. Your data will also help us improve activities for other learners in the future. We are also required by the Office for Students to report on the effectiveness of our work. Under data protection laws (UK GDPR) we are able to process your data because it is necessary for this part of our work. In legal terms the lawful basis is Article 6(1)(e) of UK GDPR, which allows us to process personal data where it is necessary to for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest.
We don’t always ask for sensitive info but on some projects, we might ask more sensitive questions such as if you have ever been in care or if you have a disability. You do not have to share this information but where we collect and use this type of special category personal data the lawful basis used is Article 9(2)(g) of UK GDPR; which is for reasons of substantial public interest. The data we collect helps us ensure opportunity of treatment and meet our regulatory requirements
Who can see my personal data and is it secure?
Your data is stored very securely on our protected databases. Our team are the only people who can see it at the university. We also share your data with a service called the which is a secure database. They help us to keep track of when we worked with you and they also match the data you have given us with data held by other people, like the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Can I be identified in your reports?
We promise you will remain anonymous in any reports done on our programmes!
How long do you keep my data for?
Our projects are designed to help people achieve certain goals, such as going to university, or getting the GCSE grades you want. We will only hold onto your information for as long as it would take for usto see if you have achieved those goals and if you decided to attend university. This helps us makesure our projects actually work. When we have finished with your data we'll either anonymise it (so no-one, not even us, can see that it is about you) or remove it from our records.
What if I don’t want to give you the data you have asked for?
You don't have to provide us with everything if you prefer not to, but some of the questions are essential for us to ensure the health and safety of participants on our activities. If you have already provided your data to us then change your mind that is fine too, just let us know.
What are my other rights?
You also have the right to:
- access any personal data held by us about you, and receive a copy of that personal data
- require us to correct any inaccurate personal data we hold about you
- ask us delete your personal data, or limit its use in certain ways
