Why study this course?

This extended master’s programme is designed for international students who wish to pursue postgraduate study at London Metropolitan University and will allow guaranteed progression on to our Public Health MSc.

Our Extended Master’s Public Health MSc begins with a 15-week programme that will help improve your English language ability and study skills before starting your master’s course in public health. There is also the opportunity for those who need extra English language support to complete a pre-sessional course prior to the extended master’s programme.

Following this initial 15 weeks, you will go on to join our Public Health MSc. This will teach you about the fundamental factors when considering public health. From the viewpoint that public health policy is much wider than healthcare alone, this course will cover the social, political, environmental and economic determinants contributing to the health of the population and also consider how this can be improved. On completion of the course, you’ll be prepared for a public health career within the National Health Service (NHS), community and government organisations and agencies.

To study a degree at London Met, you must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If you require a Student visa (previously Tier 4) you may need to provide the results of a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as Academic IELTS. This course requires you to meet our standard requirements.

Your assessments at the end of each module have been carefully designed to ensure you have the opportunity to demonstrate your learning and meet the stated outcomes. Assessment methods include essay writing, formal examinations, report writing, group working, debating and formal presentations, together with the compiling of a portfolio of tasks and activities undertaken.

The programme is planned to build both your self-esteem and your confidence so you’re able to engage fully with study within the UK.

Your early modules will concentrate on supporting and directing your learning in a focused manner to ensure you’re developing at the appropriate rate and that your understanding, skills development and learning is progressing as it should. As the programme unfolds and you move to the second semester modules, the support and direction they receive will gradually be reduced and the students will transition to greater independence and autonomy.

Assessments throughout your modules will form an important part of assessing your progress. In-class activities including group working and discussion, mock debates, writing activities, mock examinations and tutor feedback given to you regarding your individual performance will ensure that you’re fully prepared for the assessments that take place at the end of each module.

Details about assessments during your specific master’s course can be found on the Public Health MSc course page.

Our extended master’s programmes are designed to help you acquire, develop and demonstrate the skills required to successfully undertake postgraduate study in your chosen field.
