Much-loved colleague will be remembered for his kindness, humour, and unwavering dedication to education.

Date: 1 November 2024

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Tom Burns, Associate Teaching Professor within the Centre for Teaching Enhancement at London Met. Tom has been a much-loved and respected member of the University community since 1994 .

Often working closely with Sandra Sinfield, his partner in profession and life, Tom was an inspirational figure in educational and learner development and the scholarship of teaching and learning, both at this institution and in the HE sector beyond. He was co-founder of the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE), an organisation with 109 members nationally and internationally, representing and supporting those working in learning development. He was also co-producer of #Take5, a blog sharing effective practice in professional development within London Met staff.

Tom was passionate about the scholarship of teaching and learning and creating spaces for early researchers and writers to publish in the field. He co-authored Teaching, Learning and Study Skills: A Guide for Tutors and Essential Study Skills: The Complete Guide to Success at University (5th Edition), was co-editor of the book Collaboration in Higher Education: A New Ecology of Practice (published by Bloomsbury in 2023), and has made many contributions to book chapters and journals in his field. Tom also loved teaching, especially on the University's PGCert in Higher Education, MA in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and on our Education for Social Justice Pedagogy Workshops. Those who shared classrooms with him will recount how transformative and impactful the experience was on their pedagogy.

Tom's commitment to excellence in teaching is demonstrated through his University Teaching Fellowship, and AdvanceHE Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE) award in 2022. His dedication to innovative teaching practice, creativity, inclusivity, and social justice leaves an enduring legacy. Tom's warmth, generosity, and infectious passion for education, blending the academically rigorous with the joyfully playful, has contributed to the successful careers of many educators. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

We have created a book of condolences for those who wish to pay their respects and share memories.

During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his life partner Sandra Sinfield, and his family, friends, and colleagues. For those affected by this sad news, we want to remind you that our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is available 24/7 to provide support.
