The awards programme has been rolled out to celebrate outstanding achievements in the HE sector

Date: 18 July 2024

London Metropolitan University, alongside two local universities – Queen Mary University of London, and University of East London – have won the Best Research Collaboration in London category at this year’s London Higher Awards.

The gold award was given for a collaboration which focuses on bettering health outcomes in the community. The collaborative project, Tower Hamlets Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC), benefitted greatly from the partnership and shared resources the three universities contributed.

Funded by NIHR for five years, the HDRC is led by Tower Hamlets Council in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council for Voluntary Service (THCVS), as well as the three universities mentioned.

Sophie Cloutterbuck, Director of London Engagement at London Met, commented: "We are so proud to be acknowledged for our work alongside two other fantastic London universities at London Higher this year. The work we do in the community has tangible benefits to citizens and isn’t simply a tick-box exercise. Working alongside smart people and using our research and skills for good is a very rewarding feeling.”

The aim of the HRDC is to put Tower Hamlets on the map to render it the go-to for high quality, co-produced and impactful research which focuses on health determinants to improve health outcomes, service provision and policy.

Dr Philippa Lloyd, Vice-Principal (Policy and Strategic Partnerships) at Queen Mary University of London, said: “We are so pleased to receive these awards, recognising the role our local communities allow us to play in civic life. The Health Determinants Research Collaboration would not be possible without the engagement and enthusiasm of local groups and residents. Congratulations to all the colleagues involved in both projects.”

London Met’s role in the HDRC is rooted in its commitment to civic engagement through the Met Lab. Through our civic network, we are on a mission to tackle the inequalities facing London, to improve people’s lives and to deliver social justice.

The awards, new this year on the 25th anniversary of London Higher, are for Higher Education Institutions in London.
