Professor Fiona Vera-Gray Writes for Stylist about Women's Views on Porn

Professor Fiona Vera-Gray on the contradictions in women’s experiences of porn, as her thought-provoking book Women on Porn is released in paperback.

Date: 6 February 2025

Professor Fiona Vera-Gray from the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit at London Metropolitan University has written for Stylist magazine about the complex and often conflicting relationship many women have with pornography. The article coincides with the paperback release of her book Women on Porn, which explores female perspectives on the adult content industry.

In her research, Fiona spoke to 100 women about their experiences with porn. Many described feeling torn—aware of problematic gender dynamics yet still engaging with it. She challenges the idea that women are either pro- or anti-porn, arguing that the reality is far more nuanced.

"Across the board, women were talking about watching content they thought wasn’t good for women as a group or wasn’t saying good things about women, but at the same time, they were experiencing pleasure from it," she writes in Stylist. "That’s the conflict that makes us not want to talk about porn."

Her research sheds light on how porn shapes women’s sexuality, often in ways that go unspoken.
