University statement on display of Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) flag on stage at our winter graduation ceremony

Earlier this week, attendees noticed that a graduate walking across the stage carried a flag of the extremist Pakistani anti-blasphemy political party Tehreek-e-Labbaik (TLP) during one of our graduation ceremonies.
We have clear expectations around behaviours to ensure all university events are inclusive, respectful and welcoming for all. While we uphold freedom of speech as a cornerstone of education, we expect this freedom to be exercised responsibly.
We have considered this incident in accordance with our internal safeguarding and Prevent policies and procedures.

Graduation is a time for celebration and we congratulate all our graduates for the hard work and dedication they have shown.
