Dr Ahmet Erdi Öztürk, a Reader in Politics and International Relations, and a member of the Global Diversities and Inequalities Research Centre at London Metropolitan University won the 2024 Academic Excellence Award from the London-based Centre for Turkey Studies (CEFTUS). This prestigious recognition, awarded after a competitive selection process and a popular vote from Turkey's diaspora in London and the UK, underscores Dr Öztürk’s contributions to Turkish studies and his efforts to foster positive relations between Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Founded in 2011, CEFTUS is a think tank and civil society organisation based in London. Its mission is to bridge understanding between Turkey and the UK by facilitating dialogue on Turkey’s domestic and foreign policies, economic dynamics, society, and culture. The organisation plays a vital role in providing a platform for British policymakers, academics, and the public to engage with Turkey’s multifaceted issues. The CEFTUS Awards were established to celebrate the achievements of the Turkish diaspora in the UK to amplify the contributions of this community to British society. These awards honour individual and institutional accomplishments, emphasizing their influence in cultural, social, and economic domains.

The award highlights not only Dr Öztürk’s extensive research on Turkish politics and international relations and his overall academic achievements, but also the critical role he plays in fostering multicultural dialogue in London, a reflection of knowledge exchange strand of our Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy 2019/20 - 2024/25.

Commenting on the award, Erdi reflected: "Although I received accolades from other institutions like International Studies Association or Coventry University, this particular award holds a special significance for me, as it uniquely acknowledges excellence in the field of Turkish Studies and its impact on strengthening Turkey-Britain relations.”

Professor Svetlana Stephenson, Deputy Head of Research at the School of Social Sciences and Professions, said, "Dr Öztürk’s award underscores the university’s commitment to fostering academic research that promotes international cooperation and community cohesion. His work exemplifies the power of rigorous scholarship to address pressing global and societal issues, enhancing our institution’s reputation for impactful research. Many congratulations to Erdi!"
