2024 Student and Staff Research Conference at London Met: Past - Present - Future

Two days showcasing student and staff research and knowledge exchange at London Met.

Date: 30 July 2024

The fifth Student and Staff Research Conference 'Past – Present – Future: Research at London Met' took place from 2 to 3 July 2024 at London Met. The conference featured presentations from over 50 students and staff, celebrating the rich variety of research and knowledge exchange activities across the university. It highlighted our key concerns of equity, social justice, health, biological and digital security, intercultural competence, sustainability and liveable cities. The conference was organised by the Postgraduate Research Student-Staff Liaison Forum with support from the Graduate School and the Research and Postgraduate Office.

The two-day conference featured three keynote speakers:

  • Sarah Keating, Education Department of the Council of Europe, addressed the rise of populism in Europe and what citizenship and values education can do to counter it.
  • Lan Jiang, lecturer in the Guildhall School of Business and Law, celebrated decades of corporate social responsibility and governance research at London Met in a talk which reunited former students and colleagues.
  • Lucy Bullivant, London Met alumna, shared urbanist strategies to support sustainability, meaning and belonging.

A vibrant mixture of 20-minute talks, 3-minute lightning presentations, recorded presentations, group Q&A sessions and poster displays brought together research from all six schools. The event also emphasised the reach of our research and knowledge exchange beyond London Met, with an inspiring alumni roundtable and a presentation on one of our Knowledge Transfer Partnerships.

The conference featured several prizes which were awarded via audience voting. The lucky presenters are:

  • Best Poster: Winner - Oliva Ibbotson
Runner up - Ntuthuko Khanyile and Ravi Mooruth

Our keynote speaker Sarah Keating said: "The London Met annual research conference provided a vibrant forum to discuss with academics and doctoral students diverse perspectives on populism and possible solutions through education. The conversations from the conference will help inform the Council of Europe’s new European Space for Citizenship Education project."

London Met alumna and keynote speaker Lucy Bullivant commented: "It was a rewarding experience to present and reflect critically on a range of my research-led projects and their methodologies in the context of London Met’s important annual conference." External guest speaker Joseph Legate, Director of Product and Marketing at Mobilise, remarked: "It was inspiring to hear from the talented students and faculty staff on the exciting and impactful projects being undertaken at the university."

This was our best attended Student and Staff Research Conference to date, with two busy days made possible through significant support from staff and student volunteers. The conference provided a unique opportunity for students and staff to come together, showcasing the curiosity and collaboration which define research and knowledge exchange at London Metropolitan University.
