London Met researcher part of a team that won BA Leverhulme funding to explore learning and failure

Dr Wendy Ross is a part of the team that has been awarded British Academy Leverhulme Small Research Grant to explore learning and failure.

Date: 1 October 2024

Dr Wendy Ross, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the School of Social Sciences and Professions and Thomas Ormerod, Professor in Psychology at Sussex University received funding from the British Academt Leverhulme Small Research Grant scheme this month to expand their research into the importance of failure in learning and analogical transfer. The money will be used to support the design of an online interface to assess whether the experience of failure is necessary for learning to take place and to collect preliminary data on how to best present those failures. Dr Ross and Professor Ormerod hope ultimately to use the findings to create interventions that support students with making the most of their moments of failure.

Wendy commented on the award: “I am really excited about this area of research. Understanding the cognitive mechanisms behind the importance of failure to learning is key to supporting the learning experience for everyone. We all get stuck at times and we all fail at times. My research is really working to understand these states so that we can make the best of them especially as I am finding that they are key to creative thinking and innovation."

Prof. Chris Chandler, Head of Psychology at the School said: "Learning is important at every stage of life and failure is a crucial part of that learning. This research will help understand the relationship of this experience with applications to everyday life and to conditions such as Parkinson's disease and neurodevelopmental disorders."
