London Metropolitan University is celebrating a significant milestone as two of its Journalism programmes have received accreditation from the Professional Publishers Association (PPA). This recognition highlights the university’s commitment to providing high-quality journalism education that aligns with industry standards and prepares students for successful careers in media and publishing.
Following a rigorous inspection by the PPA last week, both the Fashion and Journalism BA and Journalism BA courses have been officially accredited. Notably, the accreditation applies retrospectively, meaning current Level 6 students will benefit from the PPA badging on their courses. Additionally, they will gain access to exclusive membership benefits offered by the PPA, further enhancing their professional development opportunities.
"Our third-year students, who have been working on print magazines for months, pitched their concepts directly to the PPA accreditation team, who were very impressed by their diverse concepts and their implementation," said Assoc Professor Wendy Sloane, course leader for BA Journalism and BA Fashion Marketing and Journalism.
“All the modules equip students well, with a good blend of practical and theoretical. This is a comprehensive curriculum with a strong industry focus, making students feel prepared to enter the real world.” said Gareth Pritchard, Operations Director, PPA and the accreditation panel lead.
In their final report, the team from the PPA praised key aspects of the courses:
- "London Metropolitan University’s journalism courses for their comprehensive curriculum, which ensures students develop versatile skills across print, digital, and broadcast platforms."
- "Graduates from the programme have secured roles at leading organisations including BBC, VICE, ITN, and Newsweek, underscoring the course’s strong industry links and employability focus."
- "The panel commended the university’s commitment to diversity, highlighting initiatives like the London Met Journalism Diversity Network and student-led publications such as Sappho and Young."
- "The university’s well-equipped facilities and strong support services provide students with access to essential resources and technology, further enhancing their learning experience."
A Step Forward for Journalism Education
This accreditation marks a significant achievement for London Met and underscores its dedication to excellence in journalism education. The recognition from a respected industry body like the PPA reaffirms the university’s commitment to producing skilled graduates who can thrive in today’s dynamic media landscape.
The PPA represents a diverse range of publishing professionals, from global media giants to independent content creators. Their accreditation serves as a quality mark, ensuring that London Met’s journalism courses meet the highest professional standards.
As the university continues to build on this success, students and faculty alike can take pride in being part of an institution that prioritises industry relevance, inclusivity, and academic excellence.
