Date: 7 February 2025
The Irish Embassy in London hosted a special event to launch Irish Nurses in the NHS: An Oral History, earlier this week. Co-authored by Professor Louise Ryan, a senior sociology professor at London Metropolitan University, radio producer and former nurse Gráinne McPolin, and PhD researcher and associate lecturer Neha Doshi, the book documents the experiences of Irish nurses who left home to build careers in the NHS.
The event, which drew over 120 attendees, including many of the nurses featured in the book. All copies sold out on the night, reflecting strong interest in the stories it shares. Based on personal interviews, the book explores the motivations, challenges, and successes of Irish nurses in Britain. Many faced cultural and professional adjustments while making vital contributions to the healthcare system.
Speaking at the launch, Professor Ryan stressed the importance of recognising these nurses’ experiences. “For decades, Irish nurses formed the backbone of the NHS, yet their voices were often overlooked. This book ensures their contributions are acknowledged and their stories preserved,” she said. She also highlighted the wider themes of migration, community, and the strong ties between Ireland and Britain.
Gráinne McPolin, a former nurse turned radio producer, played a key role in capturing these first-hand accounts. Her experience in both nursing and media helped ensure these voices were recorded with authenticity and care. The book sheds light on themes of identity, resilience, and belonging, illustrating the significant role Irish nurses played in shaping British healthcare.
Neha Doshi, whose research focuses on race and media, contributed insights into how Irish nurses navigated identity and belonging in the NHS. Her involvement brings a broader perspective on diversity within Britain’s healthcare workforce.
Irish Nurses in the NHS is published by Four Courts Press and available to order now.
