Dr Adrian Guachalla Gutierrez

Dr Adrian Guachalla SFHEA is a Lecturer in Tourism and Creative Enterprise at the Guildhall School of Business and Law.

Adrian holds a PhD in Tourism Management and spent several years working in the hospitality industry which led to a career in teaching, He is now a Lecturer in Tourism and Creative Enterprise at London Metropolitan University. 

He was awarded a Doctorate in Tourism Management by the University of Westminster upon completion of his PhD research which focused on the Royal Opera House and its role in the perception and experience of Covent Garden. This study has richly informed his lecturing practice and has been disseminated in a variety of academic platforms.

 

Adrian’s teaching is rooted in several years working in the hospitality and tourism industries as a Visitor Experience Hospitality Agent at the Royal Opera House and in events management/student services as a Resident Advisor at International Students House in London.

Before joining London Metropolitan University, he served as Course Leader and Subject Lead in tourism and hospitality at Buckinghamshire New University. Prior to this, he developed and led academic programmes in festivals and events management at Middlesex University at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Other roles in Higher Education include a Senior lecturing role at Canterbury Christ Church University and teaching tourism and events at the University of Westminster.

He is currently leading the following modules:

LT5090 Cities, Tourism and Eventfulness

LT4057 Event Planning and Management

Adrian has been extensively involved in supporting student employability and published research on the best approaches to provide students with the most ample set of skills and tools to secure the jobs they wish to pursue. 

His PhD thesis yielded four journal publications and a book chapter on cultural tourism. Following this, he developed an interest in culinary tourism which resulted in two journal articles followed by publications on heritage tourism. 

He is a regular speaker at international conferences on tourism studies to further engage the wider academic community with his research. In addition, he represents London Metropolitan University at the Association for Tourism and Leisure Research and Education (ATLAS) as a Special Interest Group coordinator of the heritage tourism study group.

Adrian was awarded a scholarship to pursue an MA in Tourism Management leading to a fully funded research grant to pursue and file his PhD at the University of Westminster's School of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Adrian is currently an External Examiner for Teesside University's tourism degrees and also acted as External Examiner for Southampton Solent University, Middlesex University and Bournemouth University’s International College tourism and hospitality programmes.

Adrian was Buckinghamshire New University’s first academic to be awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
