Anna Jochymek

Anna is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the School of Social Sciences and Professions.

A proven artist, ethnographer, researcher and facilitator of unique, interdisciplinary art projects worldwide across public art sector and cultural institutions.

Her evolution as a scholar and artist is exemplified by her academic journey—from enrolling initially at the University of Fine Arts in Poznan leading to a practice-led PhD student exchange with the Slade School of Fine Art (UCL) in London. Her awarded PhD, titled 'Crowd Crystal: The Space of Fear in Contemporary Society,' reflects her dedication to challenging established norms in both art and academia. Her research delves into critical questions surrounding social exclusion and marginalization, leading to the development and exploration of the concept of the 'Space of Fear' within the context of contemporary society.

Driven by a commitment to innovation, she operates at the nexus of action ethnography, visual art performance, digital media experimentation, and site-specific interventions, often utilizing her own family as a compelling case study for intimate ethnography. Navigating seamlessly between social anthropology and visual arts, she has crafted an interdisciplinary approach that employs both conventional and creative methods to challenge prevailing perceptions of otherness, difference, and national boundaries.
