Diane Smith

With over 15 years of experience in the Higher Education sector, Diane is the University’s Research & Knowledge Exchange Impact Manager. She supports researchers and academics from across the London Met community in having an impact through their research and knowledge exchange activities.

Diane provides training to all levels of researchers from PGRs to experienced professors and supports embedding impact into funding applications. She is leading London Met’s Engagement and Impact submission preparation for REF2029.

Diane Smith

Diane joined the Research and Postgraduate Office at London Met in October 2019 as Impact Manager. She supports London Met colleagues to generate, promote, record and articulate the impact of their research and knowledge exchange activities. Diane is currently leading London Met’s preparations for the Engagement and Impact submission to REF2029.

Diane managed the University’s impact submission to REF2021, in which 64% of case studies were assessed as demonstrating outstanding or very considerable impacts in terms of reach and significance (4* or 3*).

Previously, she worked at Brunel University London for over 11 years, including providing support to academics in the preparation of Impact Case Studies for REF.

Diane completed her doctorate in American Political History at Brunel in 2019, and has a Master’s in American Politics from Birkbeck, University of London and a BA (Hons) in American Studies from Lancaster University.

Diane’s research interests include:

  • Ethics for impact: supporting the development of ethical and responsible processes for the impact of research
  • Impeachment in the career of Governor Huey P Long, Louisiana
