More about Dr Helton Levy

Dr Helton Levy holds a PhD in Sociology from City, University of London and an M.A. in Media and Communications from the same university. He has earned two B.A. degrees, one in journalism and another in humanities, with a minor in art history. He previously occupied teaching and research positions at City, University of London, King’s College London, University College London, and John Cabot University in Rome.

Dr Levy has been teaching innovative media sociology modules such as urban media, digital media, and political communication. In 2023, he has also contributed for the design of the new media and communications programme for arts journalism, queer media, media and politics, and creative practice. Dr Helton Levy is module leader for the MA in Digital Journalism, also Media, Power, and Politics, Urban Media, and Queer Media, Culture and Politics at undergraduate level.

Dr Levy's research interests lie in understanding transformative aspects of digital media produced from the margins of the contemporary city, considering the growing technological, visual, and discursive convergence. Dr Levy is the founder and chair of the Queer Decolonization Network. He is a member of the Association of Internet Research (AoIR) and the Society of Latin American Studies (SLAS). He is a working group lead at the Trans+ Research Centre. At LondonMet, he is a member of the Global Diversities and Inequalities Research Centre at LondonMet and an affiliate to the Gender and Sexual Diversity Research Group. Dr Levy is a Fellow at the Higher Education Academy/Advance.

Dr Levy is a widely published journalist with over 20 years of experience. In 2017, he founded Readingtheperiphery.org, an online archive, providing free access to postcolonial literature about the "New World".

Dr Levy is an Associate Editor at Alternautas, Interdisciplinary Journal of Latin American Studies published by the University of Warwick. He is also a board member at the Frontiers in Communication and Journal of Global Diaspora and the Media.

Dr Levy has recently been part of an international team researching technological convergences in Europe's major cities.

Dr Levy acted as jury for the 2025 Nancy Baym Book Award. He has been an associate editor at Alternautas, Journal of Latin American Studies. Dr Levy has acted as a reviewer for several publications, including Journalism, Journalism Practice, Bulletin of Latin American Research, Journal of Digital Sociology, Convergence, Matrizes, Media and Communication, Comunicaçao e Sociedade, International Communication Gazette, Global Diaspora and the Media, ICA Conference 2022.
