Klaus Fischer

Klaus Fischer is Professor of Linguistics and Head of the Graduate School. He oversees the training of research students and helps organise the annual staff-student research conference.

He is research lead at the Guildhall School of Business and Law and chair of the University Research Ethics Sub-Committee. He is Honorary Secretary of the Philological Society, member of the International Advisory Board of the Leibniz Institute for German Language, fellow of AdvanceHE, member of the Forum for Germanic Language Studies, the Association for German Studies in Great Britain and Ireland, the Linguistics Association of Great Britain and the Advisory Board for Phrasis: Studies in Language and Literature (Ghent). He also co-convened London Met’s REF submission in Area Studies.

Klaus' research interests are in the areas of language and language learning, especially argument structure, focus constructions and the typology of English and German, but also spoken language, classroom interaction and multilingual education. He has worked within the framework of dependency grammar, but is open for complementary or alternative approaches. He has made contributions to the foundation of valency theory, to the contrastive description of English and German sentence patterns and to the understanding of cleft sentences. In addition to the structural description of language and languages, he is very much interested in the use of language in different contexts such as in political communication and in language learning.

Qualifications

First State Examination in Philosophy and German (MA equivalent) (Bonn University) 

PhD, Investigations into Verb Valency, contrasting German and English (University of Wales)

Klaus currently teaches on the Teaching Languages (English) MA and the English Language Teaching (distance learning) MA.

His teaching experience spans a number of areas – he has taught German language at all levels, German linguistics, literature, politics and film on BA and MA German programmes as well as Political Communication (Media and Communications MA) and The Literature of Childhood (English Literature BA). He has also supervised BA dissertations in English Literature and in Education Studies.

He is involved in PhD supervision of projects on language learning, creative writing and migration. He particularly welcomes proposals in German and contrastive linguistics.
