Dr Short has held electronics and telecommunications positions for over 40 years.
After acting as a vice president for Telefonica Europe for 17 years, he took on a wider consulting role in 2016, establishing Airedale Advisors.
He has had experience with five generations of mobile technology and mobile data services, including pioneering 5G innovation research and is a co founder of the University of Surrey’s 5G Innovation Centre.
During his career Mike has been involved in international mobile licence bids, network and mobile data launches, and recently research, standards and innovation for business development in areas as diverse as mobile messaging and text giving, mobile TV, smart metering, digital healthcare, transport telematics and connected cars, smart cities and emergency services. He helped establish Telefonica Wayra as a leading accelerator of digital start-ups in London in 2008 and has been a member of the Smart London Board. He was also appointed to the EM3 LEP Board two years ago, and recently chaired a science and innovation audit for BEIS.
He holds current visiting professor positions at the Universities of Surrey, Coventry, Leeds and Lancaster, and was awarded a CBE by the Queen in 2012 for services within the mobile industry.
