Sri Lankan Computing (including foundation year) BSc (Hons) student Mark Shenall Schubert discusses his decision to move to London to pursue his studies at London Met.
Why did you decide to study at London Met?
I read many reviews and student experiences on the London Met website and it assured me that this University helps students to focus on their career path and achieve their goals in the corporate world.
Why did you want to study in London?
London is one of the cities that I have always dreamt of visiting. It is one of the most beautiful and popular cities in the world and a city that is full of entertainment and life. London also has some of the best universities in the world that have produced many brilliant mastermind alumni. With such a large cultural diversity and city that is like the epicenter of the world, who wouldn’t love to study and live in London!
How did you find it moving to another country?
In the beginning I was a bit worried and sad moving from my home country to a totally unknown place. But my ambition and dream to study at a London university was much greater to me and that helped me to overcome my worry and I became determined to make my dream come true.
What really caught me off guard was how excited and thrilled I felt once I came to the UK. The beauty of London and the community made me feel very comfortable and I didn’t feel like a stranger even though I was coming from another part of the world.
What has been your favourite part of your course?
Firstly, since the student population is made up of many nationalities, interacting with each of them has been one of my favourite parts of this course.
Secondly, what surprised me was how much everyone cares about each other. The lecturers, my classmates and even students from other departments are so supportive and understanding. That makes me forget that I am from a different part of the world. What really surprised me was the relationship between the lecturers and students. I feel at ease to query any doubts I encounter with no hesitation. I feel all of us are one team and can be open with each other; it’s more like family.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
Since my path of education is computing and my goal is to be an expert in the information technology industry, my intention after graduation would be to pursue a career that would suit my professional qualifications. Since it’s a competitive field, it’s really important that I stay up to date with the industry and as such I shall avail myself to all available knowledge.
What would you say to an international student considering a degree with London Met?
I would definitely recommend London Metropolitan University without a doubt, since it is an experience that you won't get from another university. In my opinion it has the best facilities, the best teaching quality, the best lecturers and the best social environment. I would say to prospective students to have no doubts about the lecturers as their commitment towards students is great and you will no doubt feel at home here.
