More inclusive learning environments is a personal interest that Artificial intelligence MSc graduate Sabin has been able to combine with his expertise in data analytics, thanks to a unique KTP collaboration between London Metropolitan University and edtech company Filisia Interfaces Ltd.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Sabin Nakarmi and I am from Nepal. I graduated from London Metropolitan University with a degree in Artificial Intelligence. I have a strong interest in the field of artificial intelligence and data analytics which led me to pursue this field and I have grasped the opportunity to work in it.
What brought you to this role as a KTP Associate with London Met?
Having gathered theoretical knowledge in my field, the KTP project provided me the opportunity to use that knowledge to solve real-world problems and exchange that knowledge with the companies that require it. Furthermore, the KTP project has improved my prospects for my personal career development, networking opportunities with various individuals in the field and has given me a chance to make an impactful contribution with my work.
Tell us more about the KTP you manage.
My KTP project is a collaboration with London Met and Filisia Interfaces LTD. The company works on developing edtech and assistive technology to help in the field of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). We work closely with schools and occupational therapists to create a more inclusive learning environment for those who can benefit from it. My role in the project is to do with implementing artificial intelligence and data analytics in the company product to implement progress tracking and adaptive gaming.
What is your biggest passion in life and where did that passion come from?
Having an interest in the field of AI and data, I had always thought that getting to use my expertise in something that can help people would make it more worthwhile. Growing up, I had always looked up to my mother who is a psychologist and was very keen on how therapy benefitted the day-to-day life of individuals. The KTP in essence was the perfect fit for my technical background and my personal interests.
What drives you?
I like to solve complex problems and see tangible results for my work. Getting to implement my technical expertise into a real-life application and seeing the results gives me the opportunity to do just that.
What has been the proudest moment in your life?
My proudest moment in my life has been to make my parents proud. They have worked vary hard in their lives to give me a happy childhood and I plan to keep succeeding in mine so that I return that happiness tenfold.
Tell us a little bit about your interests outside of work and why they are important to you.
Music and food are two very important parts of my life. I like to cook and go out to try different cuisines from all over the world. Eating their food and listening to their music is a great way of experiencing a culture no matter where you are.
What’s next in your career?
The KTP has given me a new perspective on how I can further advance my career and even shown me new avenues that I can take. To that end, I have plans to get accreditations and credentials so I am prepared to pursue those avenues and progress further.
Do you have any advice for anyone considering applying for KTP Associate roles?
From my personal experience, I would recommend anyone who is considering to apply for the KTP Associate role to definitely go ahead with it. This role has not only improved my technical skills but also other aspects of who I am and what I can be. The support from the company, the University and InnovateUK has been exemplary and has changed my perspective on how one should work. Having said that, communication is a key factor in all aspects of our lives and this project has helped me improve myself more that I could have imagined.
