The private viewing of Isha Bøhling's exhibition as the first artist-in-residence is on Friday 5 April 2019 at 5pm, with a live performance at 6.30pm.
You are warmly invited to the private viewing of Isha Bøhling's exhibition as the first artist-in-residence for London Met's Music Technology and Production BSc (Hons) programme, with an exciting live performance at 6.30pm on Friday 5 April 2019. The private viewing takes place at London Met's The Wash Houses and opens at 5pm.
Isha Bøhling is the artist-in-residence on the Sonic Arts Residency programme at London Met, a pilot by the School of Computing and Digital Media. The works created during her residency will culminate in an exhibition which will include site specific light and sound installations and performance.
Behind these walls is a light and sound installation, installed in The Wash Houses’ stairwell. The artist’s voice is heard singing, inviting the viewer to walk up the stairs. Light comes from the centre of the stairwell shining up while skylight shines down the lightwell. The existing wall lamps join in the narrative, looking a little like floating moons. The lyrics of the song respond to the building’s former use as a wash house and the lost rivers bricked up underground.
In the live performance Light Speak, Bøhling uses obsolete technology left over from the music department’s historical archive. Old oscilloscopes respond in real-time to the frequencies of her sound works visualising the audio signal through an oscilloscope-style display.
This data in combination with current technology from Cycling’74 Max/Jitter yields a video backdrop for the performance. The artist will perform vocals and music alongside with guitar and a defunct 70s synthesizer and sound recordings.
The artist looks for meanings behind patterns in the systems that we create in an attempt to understand the ‘bigger picture’; that of our world and our universe. The songs allude to these questions while blurring between fictional and real narratives.
The exhibition will run from Monday 8 April to Friday 12 April, from 12-6pm daily. Tickets are free and all are welcome!
