Special guest Dr Mechtild Widrich, Associate Professor at the Art Institute of Chicago, will be live from the US to discuss her research on Performative Monuments, as part of the "Performance, Monuments and Public Spaces" series. Mechtild's contribution will be followed by another example of expanded performance, by our PhD candidate Francesca Filatondi.
Revisiting her 2014 book Performative Monuments: The Rematerialisation of Public Art (Manchester University Press, 2014), Widrich will discuss current trends related to both monumentality and performance, such as repetition and reenactment in contemporary art in the new millennium and its dependence on our media condition, and show how new or emergent artworks link to the longue durée of history.
Mechtild Widrich researches, writes and teaches at the intersection of modern and contemporary art and architecture, with a focus on time-based and ephemeral practices, in particular performance and art in public space, monuments, and questions of the public sphere. Widrich is Associate Professor of Art History, Theory and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and 2019-22 reviews editor for Art Journal.
Francesca Filatondi's presentation provides an insight into her PhD research, in which she aims to develop an original choreographic methodology for Artistic Swimming. Led by investigative experiments with a range of choreographic and somatic approaches, this practice-based research stems from two intentions: developing a rigorous training method and advancing choreographic practice in Artistic Swimming. In doing so, it aims to expand the expressive potential of the swimmer's body and provide a new cultural insight into this discipline.
Francesca Filatondi was a member of the Italian Artistic Swimming Elite Squad and is currently Head of the Coaches for the Youth National British Squad in UK. She is a PhD candidate at London Met and founder of the UNDINE AQUATIC THEATRE, an international company of artistic swimmers with the purpose of expanding this practice within the context of contemporary performance.
