Making Matters - The Exhibition

Making Matters: The Exhibition, curated by Simone ten Hompel is the first exhibition hosted by the Making Matters research group, one of three core groups that make up the Centre for Creative Arts, Cultures and Engagement (CREATURE) at London Met's School of Art, Architecture and Design.

The exhibition brings together thirteen staff members and PhD students from The School of Art Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University, highlighting the synergies within their artistic practices and methodologies – connections that appear both in materiality and thematic exploration. Taking place between 6 - 13 May, Making Matters opens with a Private View on 5 May from 5.30 - 8pm with a welcome including contributions from Prof. Matthew Barac and Dr. Jacek Ludwig Scarso.

Making Matters deals with the practices, processes and theories of the creative arts. The group fosters interdisciplinary exchanges to reframe our understanding of the act of making and how this may be viewed both as a methodological vehicle and as the outcome of a rigorous research process.

Making, in this sense, is approached as a broad concept, embracing both material and conceptual practices across all creative disciplines. From exploring how an artwork (object-based, design-based, digital, ephemeral, and more) may constitute research, to developing innovative systems of making creative work, Making Matters aims to promote research projects and practice-based investigation in this area of inquiry.

This exhibition will feature works from a wide range of disciplines, including visual arts, textile, installation, video, literary practices and performance interventions: all together in one space, this combination encourages artists and viewers alike to analyse the commonalities and interactions between artistic and research processes.

The exhibiting artists are George Fereday, Francesca Filatondi, Maria-Irina Georgescu, Johanna Hallsten, Simone ten Hompel (also curator), James Hunting, Christina Morbi, Kaye Newman, Gina Pierce, Wendy Ross, Jane Turner and Samuel Wingate

Talking about the exhibition, Dr. Jacek Ludwig Scarso, Reader in Art and Performance and Deputy Director of CREATURE said, "On behalf of CREATURE, we are thrilled to host our first physical exhibition curated by Simone ten Hompel and featuring numerous staff members and PhD students, whose creative practice will be shown in a wide range of media. From visual arts to performance, from object-based to digital practice, the work presented here is framed by the principle that making is a form of research, investigating new possibilities and deriving from a rigorous process of inquiry. This is a key idea in our work at CREATURE and one that we will continue to champion in our forthcoming projects."
