Architecture Beyond Buildings

15 November 2023

This event attended by university staff, graduate students and external experts considered the range of activities and experiences that constitute architecture as a broad field of activity. The starting point for this discussion was an acknowledgement that architecture includes many different producers, as well as mediators and consumers, all of whom are involved in the production of architecture. By “de-centering” the finished building and individual author (architect), we can explore the diversity of people, things, places and actions that can be included in a definition of architecture. The forum explored how this expanded field of architecture interacts and overlaps with other fields such as media and design.

It brought together academics from design and architecture, who each gave a short presentation followed by a discussion which included concepts of immateriality, mediation and representation in the debate over what architecture can be beyond buildings.
