The Microbiology Research Unit (MRU) successfully secured £9,000 in funding to host two workshops that brought together academics, industry professionals, and experts to advance biofortification in the UK. Organised by two members of the Biofortification Hub, Jenny Walton (HarvestPlus, USA) and Hamid Ghoddusi (School of Human Sciences), both workshops were funded by the Biofortification Hub and held at London Metropolitan University.
The workshops focused on the regulatory, commercial, and practical applications of biofortification. This two-day event provided a valuable platform to explore integrating biofortification into the UK food system, addressing regulatory considerations and consumer perceptions.
Day 1 focused on the rules and regulations for biofortified commodities in the UK and was composed of a group of experts and professionals in the field of standards and regulations covering feed and food. Day 2 focused on stimulating adoption and production of biofortified feed and food for the UK, involving a broader group of experts covering the entire value chain and enabling factors.
This was a successful meeting that involved interesting presentations from invited speakers, followed by discussion groups that highlighted the important aspects of biofortification that need to be addressed with the overall aim of improving health and nutrition for all.
