Digital Forensics Laboratory

The London Metropolitan University Digital Forensics Laboratory focuses on the study and application of digital forensics, cybercrime investigation, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI). Located within the School of Computing and Digital Media, the lab provides a dynamic environment where students and researchers can engage with the latest technologies, focussing particularly on how AI is revolutionising the field of digital forensics and cybersecurity.

Function and purpose

The primary function of the Digital Forensics Laboratory is to serve as an advanced training ground for students pursuing degrees in digital forensics, cybersecurity and applied AI, and related disciplines. The lab is uniquely positioned at the intersection of traditional forensic practices and cutting-edge AI applications. Students learn to utilise AI-driven tools and techniques that enhance the efficiency and accuracy of digital investigations, such as automated threat detection, machine learning algorithms for anomaly detection, and predictive analytics for gathering forensic artefacts.

Current projects and research

The laboratory is at the forefront of several pioneering projects that integrate AI into digital forensics and cybersecurity. These projects include developing AI models for post-incident cyber investigations such as ransomware and phishing attacks, creating advanced forensic techniques for analysing cloud environments, applying large language models, and leveraging AI to uncover digital evidence from Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The lab's research often involves collaboration with industry partners and law enforcement agencies, providing students with invaluable experience in applying AI to solve real-world cybersecurity challenges.

Support for students

For students, the Digital Forensics Laboratory offers a unique, immersive learning experience that goes beyond traditional methods by integrating AI into their training. This environment allows students to work on live projects that involve AI-based solutions, participate in simulations that mimic real-world cyber incidents, and contribute to ground-breaking research initiatives. The lab equips students with the skills needed to harness AI for digital forensics and cybersecurity, making them highly competitive in the job market. Additionally, the laboratory hosts workshops, guest lectures, and specialised training sessions focused on AI in cybersecurity, further enhancing students’ knowledge and career readiness.

The London Metropolitan University Digital Forensics Laboratory serves not only as a hub for digital forensic investigations but also as a centre of innovation, applying AI to advance the field of cybersecurity. As a result of providing access to cutting-edge tools and fostering a collaborative space for learning, the lab bridges the gap between academic study and professional practice, preparing students to lead in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital forensics and cybersecurity.
