GENESIS Lab

About GENESIS Lab

The GENESIS (Next Generation Grid, Sensor, AI, and Sustainability) research lab is a vital part of the Cyber Security Research Center at the School of Computing and Digital Media. It serves as a pioneering environment designed to undertake large-scale, multidisciplinary research projects aimed at integrating cutting-edge technologies to advance the renewable energy sector, support multinational utilities, empower consumers, and progress societal benefits. GENESIS Lab is dedicated to exploring innovative solutions that address the challenges of modern energy systems, focusing on sustainability, security, and efficiency.

Our Collaboration and Capabilities

GENESIS Lab has been established through a strategic partnership with our SME collaborator, Neuville Grid Data (NGD), a leader in grid data analytics. The lab features a suite of advanced technological assets, including a patented Grid Data Unit (GDU) provided by NGD, along with state-of-the-art sensors like the micro synchrophasor unit. These technologies enable the lab to perform precise, real-time monitoring and analysis of electrical grid performance, providing unparalleled insights into power quality, grid stability, and operational resilience.

Research Focus

Our current projects are primarily centred on building sustainable and secure smart grid infrastructures. We are dedicated to collecting, analysing, and synthesizing vast amounts of high-fidelity electrical grid measurement data, including power quality metrics, phasor measurements, raw waveform data, and ancillary data streams. These efforts are aimed at developing robust models and solutions for enhancing grid reliability, integrating renewable energy sources, and supporting the transition to a more resilient and adaptive energy landscape.

GENESIS Lab also explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity within grid operations, aiming to create intelligent systems that can predict, detect, and mitigate potential threats to grid stability.

Opportunities for Collaboration and Research

GENESIS Lab is an ideal environment for PhD students and researchers who are passionate about contributing to the future of smart grid technology, sustainable energy systems, and cybersecurity. We welcome new PhD students with suitable experience or a strong interest in areas such as, but not limited to:

  • Smart grid and microgrid technologies
  • Electrical grid data analytics and machine learning
  • Sensor networks and IoT for energy applications
  • Condition monitoring of Renewable Site
  • Data quality and uncertainty handling
  • Cybersecurity for critical infrastructure
  • Grid Twin
