Free sugars and health: the UK perspective

The Centre for Primary Health & Social Care at London Metropolitan University organised a seminar titled Free sugars and health: the UK perspective.

Our speaker was Prof. John Lodge, a Professor in Nutrition and Health at London Metropolitan University

The recommendation for the intake of free sugars in the UK is 5% of total energy, typically a maximum of 30 g/day for adults and children. The basis for these recommendations was the compelling evidence for the negative health benefits of free sugar and sugar-sweetened snack intakes, including weight gain & obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. Much of the blame has been centred on a constituent of sucrose, i.e. fructose, as this can be diverted to lipogenesis; however, some of the data is contradictory. In this presentation, we reviewed some of the evidence around this issue, including our epidemiological and intervention data from the UK.
