Studio brief
In the words of the song… find out what it means to you.
Rigorous, responsible, reactionary, riotous, revolutionary.
Exciting, enterprising, enthusiastic.
Surprising, serious, subtle, shocking, sophisticated, successful.
Provocative, purposeful, personal, pertinent, passionate.
Erudite, engaged, eloquent, empowering.
Careful, creative, collaborative, cultural, complex.
Thoughtful… triumphant.
This studio has at its heart the need for engagement, a questioning mind, a desire to experiment, a willingness to make mistakes in order to learn and an integration of reflective practice within each experience.
It is aimed at gaining and exploring a deeper understanding of the important elements in your individual design ethos and aspirations.
- You may be questioning the function of textile design.
- You might aspire to become specialist technical experts in a chosen field of surface or constructed textiles.
- You might wish to explore cross-discipline approaches to textile design.
- Sustainability and ethical concerns may well be at the heart of your design.
- You may want to explore the wider applications of a textile approach to professional practice… whilst positioning yourselves within education/wellbeing/self-expression or elsewhere.
- Your outcomes may be directed primarily towards interiors – both physical and emotional.
Creative projects will be realised through your participation with a series of open-ended competitions and exhibition opportunities.
Confirmed projects at present:
- A design competition with Camira Fabrics on designs for a woven interior fabric – the prize being a length woven on Jacquard loom.
- Working once again with Tissage rug company in Jaipur for a rug design – the prize will be a flat weave rug of the winning design to be exhibited (not kept!).
- We have been invited to show in Paris Feb 2019 in a curated textile show – 17 students will be chosen to participate.
- We are working with Designer Emily Peacock on a series of kit designs exploring well being and the therapeutic aspects of making… the winning kit design will be professionally made up and commercially available.
- Cultural capital project – designs drawing on personal cultural heritage – fashion and interiors.
- The focus will be on the communication of ideas, gaining a clarity of intent and a readiness for professional practice.
You will build, confirm, and refine your creative identity and individuality.
Many voices making the same sound may be loud, but many voices exploring sounds may make music – or at least challenge the listener.
Oh, drawing underpins all practice and it is no different in this studio.
