Studio brief
Jewels are silent and yet they speak. What of? Status? Expectation of wealth? Wealth itself? Protest? Personality? Who does an object belong to? How can it speak to one of something and something else to someone else? The relationship between maker and wearer is a dynamic and thought-provoking response to lived experiences from wearer and from maker. How to interpret the dynamics will engage a deeper understanding of where the spirit of creative practice starts. Watch the dynamic relationship between jewel and wearer, how do they converse and change within the presence of one another?
These are the questions we will ask of our participants.
As practitioners we work in the context of our lived histories and experiences, these are simultaneously our cages and our freedom. As human beings we are bounded by our histories, but we cannot allow these to contain us – unless we choose to let them. So where can we go? What can we do? We are in a unique time of discomfort and constraint. It will bind us if we look away. So, we will protest, we will fight to create, and we make, make, make, come what may. Through making we make semi-permanent marks on the landscape of the body, our canvas and our muse. Then dissolve and fade away.
Everything passes.
